Juve And Chievo Clear At The Top
Sunday 9th September 2001
Juventus continued their ominous league form with a 2-0 win at Atalanta. Forward Alessandro Del Piero proved that his brace against Venezia was no flash in the pan with the opening goal after seven minutes. And France forward David Trezeguet bagged a late second to put Marcello Lippi's side ahead of their title rivals at the top of Serie A.
Internazionale were frustrated by a late Parma equaliser after a 2-2 draw at the Ennio Tardni. Defender Marco Materazzi proved that he has not lost his scoring touch, opening his account for Hector Cuper's side after just ten minutes.
Yugoslavia forward Savo Milosevic replied for the hosts on the half-hour mark. Inter showed that Ronaldo's return need not be rushed when another impressive forward, Nicola Ventola, restored their advantage. But just as Inter were eyeing a spot at the top of Serie A, Emiliano Bonnazoli netted a late goal to share the spoils.
Chievo continue to upset the form-book by ending Bologna's 100 per cent record at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi. Bernardo Carradi grabbed an early lead for the Serie A debutants, while Federico Cossato scored a second to put the seal on a dream start to their top-flight career. Luigi del Neri's side face a mouth-watering trip to face Juventus next week.
AC Milan were the day's biggest winners, smashing five past a bewildered Fiorentina at the San Siro. Andriy Shevchenko led the rout with a pair of goals with Martin Laursen, Filippo Inzaghi, his first Serie A goal for the club, and Serginho also getting on the scoresheet. Enrico Chiesa hit two for Fiorentina who remain in search of their first point.
Brescia, buoyed by the opening-day draw against Milan, opened their account against newly-promoted Torino with a goal from in-form Albania striker Igli Tare. Former Lecce striker Cristiano Lucarelli, who cost a club record 7 million, paid back some of his transfer fee with an equaliser before the break.
But Tare went to the top of the goalscoring charts with his fourth goal in two games before Roberto Baggio's penalty put the finishing touches on a 3-1 win.
Carmine Gautieri gave Piacenza the lead at home to Lecce, but Alberto Cavasin's side fought back strongly and two Guillermo Giacomazzi goals ensured a 2-1 away win for the visitors.
Emiliano Salvetti scored the only goal of the game for Verona at rock-bottom Venezia.
In Saturday's action, Roma let slip a lead against Udinese to draw 1-1, while Perugia and Lazio played out a goalless draw.
