Wins Prove Wisdom Of Zidane Sale, Says Moggi
Sunday 9th September 2001
Juventus general director Luciano Moggi has claimed his side's comfortable 2-0 victory at Atalanta vindicates the decision to sell Zinedine Zidane for 48 million in the summer. "We can clearly say that we are not missing him," he said.
Juve have been mightily impressive in winning their opening two games, but Moggi pointed out that it is still early days.
"Nothing has been decided yet," he cautioned. "We have only had two games, but what we can say is that we have proved that it is possible to play good football even when you have sold an extremely good player.
"I have to underline also that it was Zidane who wanted to move to Real Madrid, not Juventus who wanted to sell him."
There were those who questioned the wisdom of selling a man widely regarded as the best player in the world, even for a record fee, but while Zidane has struggled to settle in Spain, Juve appear to have stepped up a gear.
Alessandro del Piero has been the main beneficiary, thriving in Zidane's absence. He hit a brace a fortnight ago against Venezia and adding another on Sunday.
