We Don't Need Zizou, Says Trezeguet

Tuesday 10th July 2001

France striker David Trezeguet is convinced that Juventus will win the Scudetto next season, despite the 46 million defection of compatriot Zinedine Zidane to Real Madrid.

Zidane's decision came as a bitter blow to Juventus supporters, but Trezeguet is confident that the majestic midfielder can be replaced.

"It's true we've lost a great player," explained the 23-year-old. "But I still think the coming season is going to be interesting and I'm very excited about it.

"Having signed players like Thuram, Buffon and Nedved, I'm sure we can challenge - even without Zidane. In fact, I'm really looking forward to being a part of the new Juve."

The former Monaco star also dismissed reports that he is set to join Internazionale in part exchange for Christian Vieri. "If I ever quit Juve, it will only be to play in another country," he insisted.

"I'd never move to another Italian club. I still haven't had the chance to talk to new coach Marcello Lippi, but according to everything I've been reading, he is keen to work with me, too."

Juventus are desperate to sign the unsettled Vieri, but sports director Luciano Moggi insisted they would never consider sacrificing Trezeguet.

"There is no way in the world we would sell him," he claimed. "What would be the point in doing that? We'd love to sign Vieri, but he is no better than Trezeguet. We need both of them."

Inter president Massimo Moratti, who has agreed to meet Lippi to discuss Vieri's position, hit back: "Juventus don't seem to value Vieri as highly as we do."

Trezeguet will forever be remembered for his golden goal in the Euro 2000 final for France.

He arrived at Monaco from Argentine side Platense and became one of the most prolific scorers in the first division, along with team-mate Marco Simone and Lyon's Sonny Anderson.

Liverpool coach Gerard Houllier admitted he was interested in signing Trezeguet in May, but nothing came of his inquiry.
