Juventus Fight To Keep Zidane

Wednesday 20th June 2001

Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi declared on Wednesday that Zinedine Zidane and Edwin van der Sar would not be sold to fund a spending spree for new coach Marcello Lippi.

Zidane's future, in particular, has been the subject of intense speculation after Real Madrid president Florentino Perez made signing the France playmaker his No 1 priority.

But Moggi, who is responsible for Juve's dealings in the transfer market, blasted: "The agents and the radio stations are trying to bring Zidane to Spain, but he is not going. Whatever is said in Spain doesn't affect us in the slightest."

The Stadio delle Alpi chief also dismissed talk that Juve were looking to replace Dutch goalkeeper Van der Sar, despite vice-president Roberto Bettega revealing earlier that a 33 million bid was on the table for Parma star Gianluigi Buffon.

"If Juventus have the best defensive record it is partly due to Van der Sar. He has shown his technique and his character. It is difficult to find a better goalkeeper than him," said Moggi.
