Valencia Raise Bid For Kovacevic
Monday 18th June 2001
Valencia have stepped up their efforts to sign Yugoslavia star Darko Kovacevic from Juventus. The Spanish side have made a 9.2 million bid for the player who earns 1.3 million a season.
Kovacevic, 27, rose to prominance during two seasons at Real Sociedad. He was signed by Juve for 14 million in 1999 but has failed to establish himself at the Turin club where Filippo Inzaghi, Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet are ahead of him in the pecking order.
The big forward has scored goals at Proleter Zrenjanin, Red Star Belgrade and Real Sociedad (33 in two seasons). His only poor spell came at Sheffield Wednesday, where the Yugoslav encountered work-permit problems.
Kovacevic began hinting at a return to Spain and first-team football in May.
"I just want to play right now," he told El Sport Mundo. "Returning to Spain would be like a dream. It may not happen in June, but I have to admit that the idea does appeal to me."
