Frey Regrets Talk Of Juventus Or Lazio Move
Monday 11th June 2001
Internazionale goalkeeper Sebastian Frey has apologised to the club for revealing his interest in a move to Juventus or Lazio. "I don't want to mess things up with the chairman and supporters," explained the France star. "I don't want to ruin everything."
The Under-21 international expressed his regrets in an interview with Inter's TV channel after a report in Tuttosport. "I'm deeply upset by such news," said Frey. "I've never said that Juve are after me. I want to apologise to the club and supporters for this misunderstanding.
"I want them to know that I really care about this club. When journalists asked me about Juve and Lazio's possible interest in me, I just said I was glad because that means I'm worth it, but I'm not forgetting my commitment to Inter. I have a five-year contract."
Tuttosport's story was not the first time Frey has been linked with a move away from the San Siro.
On the day before a crunch match with Parma, which Inter lost 3-1, the keeper suggested he would quit if the Nerazzuri failed to qualify for the Champions' League.
"It's true that would make me think, because for a big European club it's become indispensable to play in the Champions' League," Frey said in May.
"If we don't make it, I think the club will be obliged to take some important decisions because certain players will not accept being outside the Champions' League."
The defeat to Parma ended Inter's faint hopes of making Europe's premier club competition and they now sit sixth in Serie A with one game remaining.
Frey also revealed last month that Lazio were leading the chase for him. "I have received offers, even though I'm still under contract with Inter. Of course it's nice it's know that people are thinking of me.
"I have had contacts in Italy. I know that Lazio want to recruit me as well as two other big Italian clubs," he said.
Frey almost joined Lazio last summer, when he returned from a sensational season on loan at Verona and demanded then-coach Marcello Lippi picked him ahead of Angelo Peruzzi. Lippi did, and Peruzzi went to Lazio.
There were also reports that Arsenal were keen on Frey, but he played down a move to London. "I am pleased with the rumours because I think Arsene Wenger is one of the top coaches in the world," he told Foot Transferts.
"I am proud that Arsenal, who are a great club, are interested in me. It is not important that England doesn't really appeal to me. The value of the club [is important] and Arsenal are respected on the international scene."
