Zambrotta Still Hopeful Of Title
Saturday 9th June 2001
Juventus midfielder Gianluca Zambrotta believes that his team can still win the Scudetto, despite trailing leaders Roma by two points. "We will do all we can against Vicenza and then hope," he said.
Juventus faced heartbreak last season when Lazio stole the title on the last day of the season. This time around, Italy midfielder Zambrotta hopes that it will be Juve's turn to stage a late title charge.
Zambrotta said: "In this sport, anything can happen. Let's hope Napoli [who play Roma] perform a miracle. We will certainly do all we can to win against Vicenza. This is all we can do and then hope.
"We are fully motivated and determined, though we know very well that we have a difficult game ahead of us.
"After facing Roma we understood that we're not inferior to them and we do not deserve second place, least of all third."
Zambrotta has had an enjoyable season and contributed towards Juve's late surge towards the title. He said: "I have a contract with Juve until 2005 and I want to stay at Juventus for as long as I can, because this is the best team.
"I'm satisfied with my season, both at Juve and with the national team. The fact that I haven't been playing in my usual role, at least at Juventus, has helped my develop as a player.
Juventus will be without Antonio Conte, who has had a knee operation, and Edgar Davids, who is suspended after failing a doping test.
