Lazio Confirm Juve Bid For Nedved
Friday 8th June 2001
Lazio could lose midfielder Pavel Nedved to Juventus after the Turin club made a 19 million bid for the Czech Republic international. "I have received an offer for Nedved from Juventus," said Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti.
The 28-year-old is in talks with Lazio over extending his contract, but the midfielder's high wage demands have reportedly forced Cragnotti to consider offers for the Czech international.
Cragnotti said: "No player is untouchable. There are always offers for top players and top clubs want only the best available."
"I would prefer not to sell any of my players, but the club has to look after its finances and safeguard its wage policy," he added.
Nedved, a tenacious player who can defend and attack, is a valuable asset to any team with his impressive scoring record from midfield.
A brave and busy competitor, he emerged on the international scene at Euro '96, where he scored in the Czechs' 2-1 win over Italy at Anfield.
Lazio signed him from Sparta Prague a few weeks later, allowing Nedved to show his skills in Serie A. He scored the winning goal against Mallorca in the European Cup Winners' Cup final in 1999 and played a major role in his side's Scudetto success a year later.
