Unsettled Kovacevic Dreams Of Spain Return

Thursday 3rd May 2001

Juventus misfit Darko Kovacevic revealed on Thursday that he would jump at the chance of a move back to Spain.

The 27-year-old, who left Real Sociedad for Juventus in a 14 million move in 1999, has struggled to hold a down a first-team place at the Turin club.

And, after seeing new-signing David Trezeguet jump ahead of him in the pecking order, the unsettled forward is ready to call time on his spell in Italy. "I just want to play right now," Kovacevic told El Sport Mundo.

"Returning to Spain would be like a dream. It may not happen in June, but I have to admit that the idea does appeal to me."

Kovacevic was handed a rare start in Juve's key match against Lecce on Sunday, but failed to make any impact on the game. He was replaced by Italy international Filippo Inzaghi in the 54th minute and almost immediately Juve began to pepper the Lecce goal.

Reports have linked the former Red Star Belgrade star with moves to Valencia and Arsenal, with Juve hoping to use the Yugoslavia international as bait to lure either Kily Gonzales or Patrick Vieira.

Meanwhile, the forward's lack of regular football has seen his international career flounder. "I only have an occasional role now," explained Kovacevic after he was left out of the Yugoslavia squad to face Russia last month.

"Against Switzerland I came off the bench and I thought I played solidly. I won't deny it - I had hoped for a greater share of the play in Ljubljana, and I was told that I wouldn't in the wrong way. Something snapped in me - I am not a sniveller," he added.
