Davids Is Down, Admits Iuliano

Wednesday 25th April 2001

Juventus defender Mark Iuliano has revealed that the doping allegations facing team-mate Edgar Davids have left the Holland international feeling depressed.

But Iuliano insisted the Davids affair will make Juventus even stronger as they chase Roma for the Serie A title. "We feel even more tight-knit," said Iuliano. "Davids will prove he is innocent."

However, the Azzurri star admitted the Dutch midfielder is struggling to come to terms with the situation.

"He told us he feels depressed," said Iuliano. "He said, 'It took me ten years to be a top-level player, to win the fans' love. Now people will think I'm an addict'".

Losing Davids would be a major blow to Juventus' hopes of reclaiming the Scudetto, but Iuliano remained up-beat.

"The next two matches will be crucial," said the central defender. "On Sunday we will have to beat Lecce then put our feet up to watch the Roma-Lazio game.

"Personally I won't support either. We'll make our bid for the Scudetto a week later when facing Roma at home."
