Zidane Joins UN's Battle Against Poverty
GENEVA, Switzerland (March 19, 2001 1:55 p.m. EST http://www.sportserver.com) - France's 1998 World Cup star Zinedine Zidane received his roving ambassador against poverty passport from the United Nations Development Fund, on Monday.
"I'm proud to be here. In the coming months our program will get under way and I'll be doing what I can to help it," said Zidane.
The 28-year-old midfielder, winner of the FIFA world player of the year award in 1998 and 2000, is currently plying his trade at Juventus in Italy and was nominated for the honorary post on March 7.
He is the second Italy-based footballer to accept such a role, joining Brazilian football star Ronaldo, who took up the UN fight against poverty in February 2000.
