Carini And Athirson Shine In Juve Debuts
Juventus' goalless draw in a friendly with Uruguay failed to produce any
goals or much entertainment on Wednesday night, but Carlo Ancelotti
considered it a useful exercise in assessing new signings Fabian Carini and
Athirson.
Whilst the fitness of Antonio Conte and David Trezeguet - who have been
sidelined for some considerable time with injuries - were closely monitored,
Uruguayan goalkeeper Carini and Athirson have not had the chance to impress
in Juve colours since signing on at the Delle Alpi.
But Ancelotti was suitably satisfied with the performance of both South
Americans.
"Carini showed great technical ability and reliability," said Ancelotti.
"Athirson played a very good first half, then had one ot two problems but
that's normal."
Carini was happy to make a first start for the Bianconeri but, for him, it
was strange having to play against his own national team.
He said: "I'm happy to play for Juventus, finally. But I would prefer to
play in others matches, because I didn't feel right about playing against my
Uruguay."
But, Athirson was the most eagerly-awaited player, after a lengthy transfer
dispute between former club Flamengo and Fifa. The Brazilian defender is
expected to become one of Juve's most important players in the future.
"I'm very happy to play at last," he said. "I'm happy, I'm really happy. Up
to a few weeks ago I was worried about stopping my career for so long."
"But now I'm here, with the shirt of one of the most important clubs in the
world. And in few weeks you will see me at my best. I promise."
