Agnelli Won't Break Bank For Ancelotti
Juventus honorary president Umberto Agnelli has warned Carlo Ancelotti that
they will not break the bank to keep him at the Stadio Delle Alpi in the
wake of Roma's record deal with Fabio Capello.
The Serie A leaders have rewarded Capello with a staggering 5 million deal
over the next two years - an Italian record. Ancelotti is in the middle of
renegotiating his contract at Juventus and his demands may have been
influenced by events in the Italian capital.
But Agnelli has told Juve coach Ancelotti that the Turin club will not be
following suit. "Nowadays coaches push themselves well beyond any acceptable
and justified economic level," he said. "That's a pity. We will never follow
such a trend."
When asked about negotiations with Ancelotti, whose current deal expires at
the end of the season, Agnelli replied: "Both sides showed their will to
seal the deal. Unfortunately, recent events have pushed some people to hope
for too much."
Ancelotti denied he had used the Capello deal to raise his wage demands.
"I'm not asking for too much at all," he said. "We have talked just once. We
will meet again then we will be quick to sign it [the contract]."
Before signing his new deal at the Stadio Olimpico, Capello had been linked
with a move to the Stadio Delle Alpi to replace Ancelotti at the end of the
season.
But, ironically, last week Ancelotti, who has been in charge at Juventus for
two years, dismissed the rumours, saying: "Capello? He is too expensive."
