Juve's Fonseca Rejects Move to St. Etienne

ST. ETIENNE, France (January 31, 2001 7:11 p.m. EST http://www.sportserver.com) - French first division side St. Etienne on Wednesday said it had failed in a bid to sign Uruguayan international striker Daniel Fonseca on loan from Italian giant Juventus.

Club president Alain Bompard had announced on Tuesday that St. Etienne was set to sign "a big-name player from a major club" ahead of Wednesday's midnight transfer deadline, but the Fonseca deal fell through at the last minute.

St. Etienne said in a statement that Fonseca had rejected the move "for personal reasons" and would stay in Italy.

Fonseca, 31, is a Serie A veteran who has scored regularly with Cagliari, Napoli, Roma and Juventus, although he has not held down a first-team place at Juve over the past two seasons.
