Davids Waiting for Roma Crisis
Friday 12th January 2001
After Juventus' draw with Fiorentina and Roma's win over third-placed
Atlanta last weekend, the cynics are already saying that the title race is
over. Edgar Davids has other ideas, though: "They will have definitely have
a crisis," he said.
Of all the sides in Serie A, Juventus are certainly the best-placed side to
mount a challenge against the league leaders - provided they start scoring,
that is.
"Roma are a great team," he said. "They score with ease and through many
different players. We are a good team, but we have more of a problem
scoring. Generally, it is always the same players that score. I, for
example, have yet to score at all."
But Davids is convinced that Juventus have put their bad phase behind them
now and, after the superb comeback against Fiorentina, believes that the Old
Lady of Italian football will be ready when their Roman rivals slip up.
"We played a great match against Fiorentina," he said. "We closed the gap
after being two goals down and played very well in the Olympic Stadium
against Roma."
"They will definitely have a crisis a some point. I don't know whether it
will be a big one or a small one, but it's impossible to keep playing so
well.
"We just have to do one thing - win all our games. Then we will look to see
where Roma are."
Davids also added a few words of praise for a player who has endured his
fair share of bad times this season. Fellow Dutchman Edwin van der Sar had a
poor start to the season but has come through his bad patch to return to his
shot-stopping best again.
"He had a terrible time of it in the autumn," he said. "But now he is at the
top. Above all, he is a great man, before being a great player as well."
