Juventus Top Consistency Table in 2000
ROME, Dec 29 (Reuters)(DS) - Lazio won the Italian championship, AS Roma are
top of the league but the most consistently successful side in Serie A in
2000 were once again Juventus.
The Turin side took 65 league points over the course of the calendar year to
Lazio's 62 and Roma's 58. AC Milan were fourth on 56 and Fiorentina fifth on
53.
Juventus also conceded fewer goals than their rivals over the year -- just
23 in 32 league matches. Roma let in 28 and Lazio 32.
Yet despite their consistency, Juventus failed to win a trophy.
They were pipped to the Serie A title by Lazio on the final day of the
season, have been knocked out of two Italian Cups during the course of the
year and are already out of this season's Champions League.
Udinese surprised many by scoring more league goals than any other Serie A
side -- 57 to Milan's 56 and Fiorentina's 55.
Milan's Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko ends the year as the top scorer
in Italy with 37 goals -- 25 in the league, four in the cup and eight in
Europe.
But Argentine Gabriel Batistuta scored more league goals than any other
player in 2000 -- 26 to Shevchenko's 25.
