Juventus to Swoop For Materazzi

Friday 15th December 2000

Juventus will make Perugia defender Marco Materazzi their No 1 target when the Italian transfer window opens in January, according to press reports.

The Bianconeri's weakness in defence was there for all to see as they crashed out of the Champions' League and the Italian Cup - and it is thought the Perugia defender could sure up their back-line.

Materazzi is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career and it is not just his defending that is catching the eye. The 27-year-old is the League's highest scoring stopper with four goals in 10 League matches.

Perugia manager Serse Cosmi rates Materazzi very highly and will do everything to keep him at the Umbria club.

Juve's clout, though, could prove vital and the Gaucci family, who own Perugia, look likely to sell their prize asset early in the New year.
