Del Piero Pays For Poor Form
Saturday 25th November 2000
Juventus meet Verona on Sunday at the Stadio Delle Alpi in what could prove
to be a new era for Carlo Ancelloti's side after the coach dropped striker
Alex Del Piero for the first time in five years.
The last time Del Piero did not make the starting line-up for reasons other
than injury, former coach Marcello Lippi had just taken charge and Roberto
Baggio was the first-choice striker.
Ancelloti had said at the beginning of the season that he could not pair new
signing David Trezeguet up front with Filipo Inzaghi due to their similar
playing styles but Del Piero's lack of goals he seen the coach try out the
new combination.
Defender Gianluca Zambrotta, who made his comeback last week when he
appeared as a late second-half substitute, will play from the start as will
centre-back Paolo Montero as he continues his recovery from a six-month
lay-off.
Verona coach Attilio Perotti recalls Martin Laursen to the middle of defence
but is without Adrain Mutu in attack as the Romanian is suffering from flu.
The Brazilian Adailton will play up front alongside youngster Gilardino.
