Edoardo Agnelli Commits Suicide

Wednesday 15th November 2000

A minutes' silence will held before Italy's friendly international against England on Wednesday to pay respect to Edoardo Agnelli, son of honourary Juventus president and Fiat owner Giovanni, who committed suicide on Wednesday morning.

Edoardo Agnelli jumped from a bridge on the Torino-Savona motorway near Fossano, plunging 80 metres to his death. Police found his car with the engine still running and his body on the banks of a stream at the bottom of the ravine.

Edoardo Agnelli was identified by Giovanni Agnelli, who immediately left Turin by helicopter when he was informed of his son's death.

Edoardo Agnelli, 46, was a member of the Juventus board in the late Eighties and early Nineties but had never worked with Fiat, preferring instead to study philosophy and travel, especially in India.

He had a drug problem and was was arrested in 1990 in Malindi, Kenya, for marijuana possession and was also a heroin addict.

For this reason he was given a 'minder' by his father who watched over him 24 hours a day. On Wednesday, however, he was alone.

The minute's silence before Wednesday's match will also pay tribute to Piero Pasinati, a member of Italy's 1938 World Cup winning side, who died on Tuesday after a short illness.
