Juve Greatness All In The Past, Claims Veron

Wednesday 8th November 2000

Ahead of Sunday's Serie A showdown with Juventus, Lazio midfielder Juan Sebastina Veron has said that his side not Juve, represent the future force in Serie A. "Juventus were great in the past, but Lazio will be the team for the future," he said.

The game has been hyped up enormously by the Italian media as it is the first time the sides have met since Lazio stole the league title from Juventus in dramatic fashion at the end of last season.

"There will be a lot of talent on show. It's always great to play against people like [Zinedine] Zidane and [Alessandro] Del Piero," said the Argentinian international.

"People say it is a case of 'Veron versus Zidane', but I disagree. I think Lazio's play centres around [Pavel] Nedved these days. He's in excellent shape," he added modestly.

"I also do not think that Juventus will be tired after their big Champions' League game in Greece. We have already shown that it is possible to play one big game after another."

However, Veron says that the current Lazio team is different from past sides and he believes that they are capable of staying at the top of the Italian game for some time.

"We must prove that last season's 1-0 win was not a fluke. I think we will win. Juventus were great in the past, but Lazio will be the team for the future," he concluded.
