Moggi Slams Hamburg For Double Dismissal
Tuesday 24th October 2000
Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi has angrily accused Hamburg players
of deliberately provoking Zinedine Zidane and Edgar Davids into getting sent
off as nine-man Juve crashed to a 3-1 Champions' League defeat.
"The German players hit our players," he raged. "They fouled Zidane every
time he had the ball.
"The referee didn't show a yellow card to the German players in the first
half and I don't know why."
Zidane and Davids received their marching orders in the space of four
extraordinary minutes at the Stadium Delle Alpi, with Juventus already a
goal down.
While savaging Hamburg's tactics, Moggi in no way condoned Zidane's headbutt
and Davids' retailiation - and he promised to discipline them.
"I think the two players will be punished and they deserve to and they need
to. I can't justify what they did.
"A champion like Zidane has to accept this way of playing against him and
musn't react. But Hamburg didn't play correctly.
"I have to congratulate the nine who played from the 33rd minute in the
first half. They scored a goal, they hit the bar, unfortunately there was
also a defensive mistake otherwise we might have performed a miracle."
