REPORT: Milan 2 - Juventus 2

Saturday 21st October 2000

A dramatic 90th minute strike from substitute Antonio Conte completed a fine comeback for Juventus at the San Siro on Saturday after the Rossoneri had been 2-0 up.

Juve coach Carlo Ancelotti, appearing at the stadium he graced as a player, went some way to proving his tactical skills as a coach when two second-half substitutions quickly paid dividends.

Summer signing David Trezeguet and midfield veteran Conte both came off the bench to score for the Turin club to cancel out strikes from Massimo Ambrosini and Andriy Shevcehnko.

Both sides began nervously, with few openings being created early on. A fine solo run from Edgar Davids created space for Inzaghi but the Italian international striker saw his shot roll wide of the post. The same player then had a volley blocked by Abbiati soon afterwards.

Zinedine Zidane, looking the most composed player on the pitch, came close to scoring five minutes before the interval but his delicate lob went just over the bar.

Alex Del Piero was also struggling in front of goal and twice he decided to pass to a team-mate rather than shoot when an opportunity opened up for him.

A firm header from Boban following an Albertini free-kick hit the post at the other end, but as the half drew to a close many peoples eyes were on the stands where rival fans were clashing.

Francesco Coco was introduced in the second half and Milan immediately found their attacking rhythm.

On 59 minutes they grabbed the lead when an Albertini free-kick was headed home by Ambrosini. A stunned Ancelotti didnt have the chance to make any immediate changes as just two minutes later Bobans long ball caught out the Juve defence and Shevchenko planted a firm header beyond Edwin Van der Sar.

The match looked over, but Ancelotti played his trump card, replacing Del Piero for Trezeguet and Tacchinardi for Conte on 65 minutes. And just two minutes later the visitors were back in it when he headed home a superb ball from Zidane which took a slight deflection off Alessandro Costacurta.

That was the impetus Juventus needed and they pushed forward in search of the equaliser, while Milan were relying on the counter attack.

But on 90 minutes Conte dribbled past Maldini and fired a vicious swerving shot from 22 yards that flew into the net and earned his side a point.
