Four Tossed as Juventus, Brescia Draw
MILAN (September 16, 2000 8:05 p.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com) - Four men were sent off as Roberto Baggio's new club Brescia held his former team Juventus to a 0-0 draw in the Italian Cup third round on Saturday.
AC Milan took a big step to booking a place in the Italian
Cup quarterfinals with a 3-1 win at Torino in its first leg
match while Lazio was held to a 1-1 draw at Sampdoria.
Milan took the lead against the run of play three minutes
before the break with a deflected shot from Argentine Andres
Guglielminpietro.
Substitute Oliver Bierhoff, one of several Milan regulars
rested or left on the bench, added the second in the 59th minute
from close range.
Brazilian teenager Pinga pulled one back for Torino after a
poor clearance from Roque Junior, but Guglielminpietro secured
the win a minute from time, slotting home after an excellent
pass from Croatian midfielder Drazen Brncic.
Baggio, who signed for Brescia on Thursday, made a bright
debut but is clearly short of match fitness and he was
substituted in the 67th minute.
The game was held up for 15 minutes in the first half due to
a fierce storm, but Baggio's debut and a battling display from
his new club were overshadowed by an ugly end to the game.
Juventus defender Ciro Ferrara was sent off for a foul on
Raul Gonzalez in the 85th minute and four minutes later his teammate Edgar Davids and Brescia's Argentine midfielder Andres
Yllana were dismissed after they clashed off the ball.
The game ended with both teams down to nine men after
Brescia susbtitute Simone Del Nero was sent off for a second
bookable offense.
Juventus, which only introduced Davids and Zinedine Zidane as
second half substitutes and rested striker Filippo Inzaghi, had
come closest to breaking the deadlock when Darko Kovacevic
headed a Del Piero cross against the bar.
In Genoa, Lazio, which also rested several regular first-team
players, took the lead against Sampdoria through Chilean Marcelo
Salas in the 8th minute.
Sampdoria earned a deserved equalizer nine minutes from time
when Francesco Flachi's deflected shot beat Luca Marchegiani.
Flachi should have grabbed a winner in injury time but the
Sampdoria striker failed to find the target from close range.
