History on Hamburg's Side
Friday 25th August 2000
Hamburg were happy enough with the draw for the Champions' League group stages
despite being pitted against one of the tournament favourites, Italian side
Juventus.
After witnessing the draw in Monaco on Friday, Holger Hieronymus, Hamburg's
director of sport, was confident that history was on their side.
"This has definitely some symbolic importance for us," he said. "In 1983 we won
the Champions' League against Juventus and on our comeback, 17 years later, we
will be facing them again."
Hamburg were drawn in Group E where they will have to play Spanish champions
Deportivo la Coruna and Panathanaikos as well as two-time European champions
Juve.
"We are also very happy with our other opponents," continued Hieronymus. "They
are interesting draws and we will also have a fair chance to get through."
