Only Way is Up For Trezeguet

France coach Roger Lemerre believes the form of his star striker David Trezeguet can only improve in Serie A as the youngster prepares for his first season in Italy.

The 22-year-old Juventus summer signing made it 11 goals in 22 internationals when he scored a hat-trick, albeit in a friendly, for France against a Fifa Rest of the World team in Marseille. And considering he has only started in 11 of those games, a goal every other game is some statistic to reach at that age.

Lemerre said of his Euro 2000 golden goal hero: "He will continue to progress in Italy." And the French boss knows just how close Trezeguet already is to the finished article. After his extra-time strike in Rotterdam sankthe Italians Lemerre said he was "the best player in the world in front of goal".

Playing alongside the likes of Del Piero and Zidane, the goals are likely to continue flooding in for the young striker. Looking forward to next season he said: "For a striker, it's great to have two creative players at your side."

But Trezeguet's success doesn't just stop at that Euro 2000 winner. The Rouen-born star, raised in Argentina, had already scored a vital penalty in the Paris shoot-out with Italy in the France '98 quarter-finals, and has also won the French league twice with Monaco.

The 14 million man has also picked up the handy habit of notching vital goals. As well as his Rotterdam volley he grabbed the winner in the 3-2 victory over Iceland that sealed France's qualification for Euro 2000 after they had struggled earlier in the group.

He also netted a brace in the recent 3-2 comeback over Slovenia to save the nation an embarrassing result, and also scored some crucial goals for his club last season, most notably a hat-trick against Bastia.

With competition from Thierry Henry and Nicolas Anelka, Trezeguet isn't an automatic choice for France, but he seems to be making a name for himself nevertheless.

He will also face competition for a place in the Juventus team from Filippo Inzaghi, Alessandro Del Piero, Darko Kovacevic and Daniel Fonseca - but with Trezeguet's habit of notching vital strikes his name won't be far away from Carlo Ancelotti's thoughts.
