Zoff Confirms Faith in Goal-Shy Inzaghi
GEEL, Belgium, June 23 (Reuters)(DS) - Italy coach Dino Zoff confirmed his faith in Filippo Inzaghi on Friday even though the Juventus striker has not scored in open play in his last 14 appearances for club and country.
"There are always doubts but he's been very close to scoring so many times," Zoff said when asked at Euro 2000 about Inzaghi's goal drought. Inzaghi last scored in open play for Italy in a 4-0 defeat of Wales in the European qualifiers last June.
He has since scored just once in nine appearances for the Azzurri -- from the penalty spot in their 2-1 defeat of Turkey in their opening match of Euro 2000. Inzaghi's last goal for Juventus came on March 12. He failed to find the back of the net in his last nine appearances of the Serie A season.
"Yes, its not usual but I'm quite calm about it," said Inzaghi, who appears certain to start Italy's quarter-final against Romania on Saturday. "The team as a whole is playing well and that's the important thing."
