Juventus May Sell Fonseca to Arsenal
Juventus are considering an offer from Arsenal to sign
Uruguayan striker Daniel Fonseca.
The former AS Roma and Napoli player was offered to
the London club last summer as part of the attempt by
the Turin club to buy then Arsenal star Nicolas
Anelka.
Arsenal refused the Juventus plan to top up their
offer for Anelka with fringe squad members like
Fonseca but recent injury problems and the loss of
Nwankwo Kanu to the African Nations Cup has forced a
re-think at the London club who would be prepared to
buy Fonseca for 3 million or take the South American
on loan.
Arsenal are known to want a finisher to boost their
squad as they prepare for a Premiership game against
Manchester United at Old Trafford next Monday night.
The game is United's first league match for a month
and Arsenal are now level with the champions on points
but United have played three games less as they chase
Leeds at the top of the division.
Arsenal know they have to win at United to stay in
serious title contention and Fonseca may join the club
by Friday if talks go well. Whether the Uruguayan is
the finisher that Arsenal need is open to debate.
Marcello Lippi used Fonseca as a lone striker at
Napoli with success but that was in 1994. Spells with
Roma and Juve have seen the Uruguayan go for months
without regular first team appearances and when he
does play it is often wide on the right in a position
now occupied at Arsenal by Thierry Henry.
