LAGOS, Nigeria (January 13, 2000 2:53 p.m. EST
http://www.sportserver.com) - Juventus midfielder Sunday Oliseh will captain Nigeria at the African Nations Cup which kicks off on Jan. 22, team officials said Thursday.
Oliseh, 28, replaces former captain Daniel Amokachi who was on Wednesday dropped from the country's squad for the championship to be co-hosted by Nigeria and Ghana, because of nagging injuries.
"Oliseh is the Eagles new captain," team official Stephen Keshi told reporters here.
"He's a polished, intelligent and disciplined player and we believe he can lead the team. The players have a high regard for him and are happy to have him as their captain."
Oliseh was first capped by Nigeria in 1993. He was in the team that won the 1994 African Nations Cup in Tunisia and Olympic gold 1996. He has played in the past for Ajax and FC Cologne and featured at the World Cup finals in 1994 and 1998.
