He has an unusual claim to fame for a goalkeeper. It was the 1991/92 season, and Michelangelo Rampulla was playing for Cremonese in a match against Atalanta. What happened in the last few minutes of the match will go down in football folklore: Rampulla made his way up field into the opposing penalty area and put a header past his opposite number in the Atalanta goal. It stands as the first and only goal to be scored by a goalkeeper in Serie A or B.
Michelangelo Rampulla was born in the town of Patti on the island of Sicily. His football career began with his hometown team, Pattese, in Italys Serie D. He then spent five years in Serie B with Varese and Cesena. The following seven seasons, played both in Serie A and B, were spent with Cremonese. Then came the call from Juve, and he has been with the club ever since.
His decision to join Juve was a tough one, because he knew he would be reserve to Angelo Peruzzi. The fact that he and his parents were Juve fans was probably the deciding factor behind his decision to join the club. Rampulla is now in his eighth season with the Bianconeri and tells us he has no regrets.
He lives with his wife Lorena and daughter Chiara in a splendid apartment in the centre of Turin. His flat is adorned with pictures and paintings. He also has a keen interest in antiques, evidence of which can be seen around his home.
Away from football Rampulla likes to spend quality time with his family. In fact the moment he walks through his door, he claims that football is the last thing on his mind. Even though work is never the topic of conversation in the Rampulla household, when Michelangelo is away playing, his wife Lorena is always glued to the TV or radio to see how Juventus have fared.
The Bianconero goalkeeper loves spending his free time on the computer surfing the Internet. He is also a lover of the English language and in the summer doubled up as an interpreter for his now room-mate Edwin Van der Sar.
Rampulla admits he has his good and bad points: his bad point is that he is a bit touchy. His good points, meanwhile, are that he is very positive in his outlook, which is something that feeds through to his colleagues. In a way, his position on the Bianconero bench makes him akin to a second coach.
He is still unsure of what he will do once his football playing career is over. He has just qualified as an amateur coach but rather than have a hands-on approach, he could see himself taking on a commercial role in football or even outside the game.
He is a connoisseur of cigars and enjoys collecting antique watches. He also loves music, especially the Italian variety and his favourite artists include Renato Zero and Eros Ramazzotti. He loves to spend his holidays on the beach. His favourite dish is spaghetti alle vongole, or spaghetti with clams.
If he hadnt become a footballer he says he would have liked to have become a surveyor. Unfortunately, he never quite managed to get his diploma as his professional aspirations took hold.
