Bologna 0 - 0 Juventus
Saturday 20 Oct 2001
The first match of the eighth round of the championship finished 0-0. The
bianconeri didn't manage to conquer at the Dall'Ara stadium, in a difficult
match against an opponent that was well organised to stop Lippi's Juve from
winning; a Juve that after midweek European success hoped also to kickstart
their domestic season.
The Bianconeri lined up with Thuram as a right back, a role in which he had
been used against Rosenborg. The central defensive partnership was composed
of Montero and Iuliano, whilst Pessotto was the left back. Lippi played his
first choice midfield, as Tacchinardi, recovered from a strong fever,
partnered Davids with Zambrotta and Nedved out wide. The attacking
partnership was formed by Del Piero-Trezeguet. Bologna meanwhile played
with just one attacker, Cruz, although behind him Zauli and ex-Juve player
Pecchia were lined up as support. Right at the start of the match Cruz
looked to trouble the Juve defence, but of his three shots (between the 6th
and 12th minutes) the first was poor, the second, set up by Brighi, went
into the side netting, whilst the third was saved by Buffon. In the
meantime, Juve started to assert herself, creating the first clear cut
chances: Thuram played the ball to Zambrotta who coming in from the right
arrived near enough to the goal to try a shot, but Pagliuca saved well.
In the 17th minute, four minutes after Zambrotta's effort, another
midfielder tried to break the deadlock with Nedved heading a cross from
Thuram. The bianconeri were creating a lot of chances but had difficulty
surprising the attentive defence of the rossoblu. In the 36th minute
Bologna awoke, as a header from Olive, nearly set up Pecchia, but Buffon
coming off his line cleared the danger. In the remainder of the half, there
was still time for a long range effort by Olive and a header by Zambrotta,
before the players returned to their dressing rooms.
At half time, Guidolin brought Gamberini on in the place of Fresi. At the
start of the second half the sides continued to toil, creating chances, but
both were cancelled out by good defences. In the 8th minute Zauli set up
Pecchia, who before being called offside, hit the post. From a similar
opportunity, Zambrotta shot wide. There were also attempts by Del Piero,
from a free kick, and by Tacchinardi from long range, but Alex's effort
finished safely in the arms of Pagliuca, whilst the midfielder's shot went
over the bar.
Lippi then took off Nedved for Maresca and Pessotto for Paramatti. Guidolin
replaced Cruz with Nervo. Del Piero had the next chance from a free kick
from the left, but Pagliuca intervened, punching the ball away. Two
minutes later, from a Zambrotta corner, Iuliano's try went over the bar.
In the 31st minute of the half, Lippi tried the last of his allotted
substitutions Tacchinardi, perhaps still tired from his fever, being
replaced by Salas. At this point Juve players picked up a couple of
injuries, Del Piero hurting his left hand in a clash which forced him to
wear a bandage, whilst more seriously two minutes later Salas left the
pitch on a stretcher with a knee problem. This left Juve with only nine
players on the pitch, whilst Bologna took off Pecchia for Bellucci.
With it's numerical superiority, Guidolin's side tried to put Juve under
pressure, and in the 41st minute of the half Brighi created confusion in
the Juve area, but the defence saved the day. In the final minutes, Juve
also tried a few efforts, but in vain, the match ending in stalemate.
