Arsenal 3 - 1 Juventus
Ljungberg 21', 88', Henry 28',
Taylor 49' (own goal)
Tuesday 4 Dec 2001
First Half:
1' Arsenal, wearing red-and-white shirts with white shorts and red socks are facing a Juventus side sporting the famous black-and-white stripes and wearing white shorts and socks. Arsenal get the game under way in what promises to be a passionate night in North London.
2' Juventus' Alessandro Del Piero wins the first corner of the night, and his near-post delivery leads to another Juventus corner which is cleared by Sol Campbell.
3' Arsenal seem to be having trouble settling into the game as Juventus dominate the midfield.
5' A wonderful low, bending shot from del Piero is saved brilliantly by Arsenal keeper Stuart Taylor.
6' From the corner, Taylor is again pressed into action at the near post, blocking a deflected goalbound ball. David Trezeguet shoots over from the loose ball.
9' Juventus are still piling on the pressure as they win another corner.
11' Ashley Cole has a powerful shot saved at the near post by Gianluigi Buffon, the ball is cleared easily from the resulting corner.
12' Patrick Vieira, the Arsenal skipper, appears to be in for a torrid night. Clearly, Juventus fear the French international as they put Igor Tudor in a man-marking role for Vieira.
14' Del Piero is running rings around his marker, Lauren, who is likely to find himself in the referee's notebook if he keeps cutting down the mercurial Italian.
16' Pavel Nedved is released after a clever flick from del Piero. Again, Taylor is there to save from close range. The ball loops up off the Arsenal keeper and Trezeguet heads the rebound over the crossbar.
17' The Highbury crowd are in good voice, but they have had little to cheer thus far. However, Arsenal appear to have doused Juventus' early threat and must now build on the possession they are getting.
20' Alessandro Birindelli concedes a corner after a lovely ball from Cole towards Robert Pires. The ball is cleared easily.
21' Goal - Ljungberg (Arsenal)
21' Arsenal take the lead, very much against the run of play in truth. Vieira's shot from the edge of the area, after good work from Lauren, is saved by Buffon, but as the ball bounces loose, Fredrik Ljungberg is on hand to push the rebound past the grounded Juventus goalkeeper and into the bottom corner.
21' Tudor (out) - Davids (in) (Juventus)
21' Juventus bring on Edgar Davids in place of an injured Igor Tudor.
22' Buffon exorcises the pain of Arsenal's goal with a smart save from Ray Parlour's 25-metre shot.
24' The goal appears to have galvanised Arsenal and had quite the opposite effect on the visiting side. Juventus look sluggish an demoralised all of a sudden, while Arsenal have come to life since scoring.
27' Gianluca Zambrotta brings down Pires to concede a free-kick in a promising position as the French man cuts across the top of the penalty area.
28' Goal - Henry (Arsenal)
28' Arsenal double their advantage from the set-piece. Thierry Henry records his sixth goal in seven 2001 UEFA Champions League appearances with a wonderful curling free-kick into the top right corner of Buffon's goal.
30' Henry almost makes it three with a sublime volley from twenty metres, but the ball drops on the top of the net.
32' Now Ljunberg really should have made it three as he finds himself clean through on the right, but can only drive the ball straight at Buffon.
33' Yellow - Nedved (Juventus)
33' Nedved is cautioned after the referee adjudges the Czechoslovakian to have taken a dive in the Arsenal penalty area. The yellow card means that Nedved will miss Juventus' next game.
35' Juventus are trying desperately to regain their composure but are struggling to hold on to the ball as Arsenal put them under pressure high up the pitch.
39' Yellow - Birindelli (Juventus)
39' Birindelli is booked and will also miss the next game.
40' Juventus are being forced back into their own half consistently, with Arsenal pressurising them at the back to ensure that they have no space to bring the ball forwards.
43' Another good effort from Ljungberg as he volleys a Kanu cross goalwards from the penalty spot. Buffon saves easily.
46' It's 2-0 to Arsenal as the sides go into the dressing-room for half-time.
Second Half:
46' Juventus kick-off the second half. Doubtless Marcello Lippi will have had a few things to say at half-time, while Arsne Wenger will have implored his side to maintain the lead they have deservedly amassed.
47' Pires is felled by Davids on the touchline.
48' Henry muscles Lilian Thuram off the ball at the edge of the penalty area, but his shot goes wide.
48' Ljungberg's early cross finds no-one in the penalty area and is easily gathered by Buffon.
49' Own goal - Taylor (Arsenal)
49' Juventus are back in business. Zambrotta breaks free after getting goal side of Cole. His shot is saved by Taylor, but as the ball bounces back out, Trezeguet drives it back towards the goal. Campbell saves the ball on the line but as the ball comes back out it hits Taylor and goes back into the goal.
54' Rather as Arsenal's first goal galvanised them, Juventus appear to have awoken from their first-half slumber and are increasingly threatening the Arsenal defence. Zambrotta shoots wide after wonderful footwork from Del Piero.
58' Kanu forces a corner for Arsenal.
59' There is a break in play while Henry receives treatment.
60' Henry is stretchered off. It is not clear if the injury is serious.
62' Montero fouls Pires near the corner flag and Henry resumes the pitch.
64' Juventus still look likely to score again. They seem to have more composure on the ball in this second half, but must be wary of Arsenal's ability to hit them on the break.
65' Yellow - Kanu (Arsenal)
65' Arsenal concede a corner, the eighth of the night. Nedved's delivery is poor, however, and Henry smacks the ball clear.
66' Kanu receives a yellow card for a foul on Gianluca Pessotto.
69' Kanu (out) - Bergkamp (in) (Arsenal)
69' Arsenal are bringing on Dennis Bergkamp for Kanu.
71' Pires is unfortunate, having worked his way round four defenders, to see his shot go wide.
71' Nedved (out) - Amoruso (in) (Juventus)
72' Pires forces Zambrotta to concede a corner, but it is easily cleared from a penalty box that is packed with players from the Italian side.
75' Smart work from Henry gives Bergkamp a left-foot opportunity, but Buffon saves easily to his right.
78' Pessotto (out) - Paramatti (in) (Juventus)
78' Intelligent play from Bergkamp gives Parlour a shooting opportunity but the England international hits the side netting with his powerful effort.
81' Henry has a shot cleared off the line by Thuram after a fabulous break from Parlour. Had Thuram not played the ball, Bergkamp was waiting at the far post.
84' Henry (out) - Grimandi (in) (Arsenal)
88' Goal - Ljungberg (Arsenal)
88' Arsenal make sure of victory with a cool finish from Ljungberg after mesmerising footwork from Bergkamp.
89' Juventus players protest after the goal as the referee had intercepted the ball to send Arsenal on the counter-attack. Davids is booked for his pains.
90' Cole (out) - Keown (in) (Arsenal)
95' It's a perfect result for Arsenal as they get their European campaign back on the level with this 3-1 victory. It's all square now in Group D with all four teams in the group having won one and lost one.
