Tuesday 23 Oct 2001
From the first minute of the match the bianconeri did exactly what everyone expected, that is looking to immediatly take the lead, knowing well that three points would mathematically ensure qualification for the next stage of the Champions league. Thanks to a great effort, Lippi's team managed to overcome Porto, thus qualifying for the next stage as winners of group E. Although the Portugese side took the lead through a Clayton freekick, goals from Del Piero, Montero and Trezeguet brought the bianconeri a 3-1 victory.
The game was practically one way traffic. Del Piero was the first to try a shot, from the edge of the area, but the goalkeeper was able to intercept. Then Zambrotta launched the ball towards Paramatti, today playing in the place of Pessotto: the ex Bologna star could however only send the ball off target. At this point, Juve suffered an unexpected setback. Clayton took a freekick ,and as the ball entered the area, it avoided everyone and snaked into the net.
Porto had taken the lead, but Lippi's team refused to be demoralised, and continued to create chances. Indeed the bianconeri had 4 excellent opportunities in a short time, with the two attackers and Nedved to the fore. In the 32nd minute,Alex Del Piero brought Juve level with a freekick of his own. The Portugese side tried to strike back quickly, but from a chance Andrade headed over. From them on it ws all Juve, Nedved having an effort saved by Ovchinnikov, whilst from distance Zambrotta hit the post with a fine strike. Right at the end of the half Capucho fired wildly over from a good position.
At the start of the second half, Juve continued on the attack, with Del Piero seeing a header stopped by Ovchinnikov, who needed two attempts to divert the ball for a corner. The breakthrough quickly came, as Montero headed home from a Del Piero cross, to give Juve the lead. The Urugyian, congratulated by teammates, ran straight to the bench, to hug his friend Iuliano. The game continued at the same intensity, as two minutes later Del Piero nearly managed to do everything himself, but his shot ended in the keeper's arms. Porto came back with a Clayton header, but this time Buffon was equal to it. Lippi's side tried to increase the lead with efforts from Tacchinardi, Nedved and Tudor, but nothing came off. Finally Juve found the net again, with a fierce Del Piero strike, but in a dubious decision, the referee disallowed it for offside.
Juve didn't let up, continuing to look for the third goal, which came from Trezeguet after Nedved had supplied him brilliantly. The Czech star was visibly growing in confidence, whilst the Frenchman's hot form in Europe continued, with his fourth goal in the Champions League. Zambrotta was substituted by Zenoni, before Lippi made another change, bringing on Maresca for Del Piero, who had played superbly nevermind the injury to his hand. Indeed with his goal tonight, Alex overtook Bettega in the table of Juventus scorers in Europe, reaching the total of 28.
