Juventus 1 - 0 Rosenborg
Trezeguet 25'

Wednesday 17 Oct 2001

Three priceless points for the bianconeri, that make it almost impossible for Rosenberg to qualify and which managed to fulfill the pre-match aim: to win this match as a part of taking advantage of the two consecutive home games, which could help Juve to qualify for the next stage. Trezeguet's goal after 25 minutes proved decisive. The Frenchman also hit the post four minutes later. Juve improved in the second half, but Rosenberg goalkeeper Arason excelled himself on more than one occasion.

The game started and it was Nedved, lively and fresh on his European debut, who was the first to try a shot, but Arason wasn't to be taken by surprise. Lippi's men then tried various off-target long range shots by Zambrotta, Nedved and Maresca, who was filling in for the fevered Tacchinardi. In defence, Juve were being careful not to make mistakes. Tudor, this evening playing as a right back, made an excellent interception on Brattbakk who had just avoided the offside trap (21'). Then Juve's attackers came to life, combining well to give the bianconeri the lead, in the 25th minute: Trezeguet heading home a Del Piero cross. The Frenchman was ecstatic, punching the ground with joy .

The fans were still celebrating when just four minutes later Trezeguet, excellently served by Zambrotta, hit the post. More self-assured having taken the lead, Lippi's team played in a freer way. Nedved tried another long range effort, whilst right at the end of the half, the linesman ruled Trezeguet offside, who claiming the rebound from a Del Piero shot, had scored.

In the second half Juve seemed more tenacious and attentive. During the break Rosenborg swapped El Fakiri for Enerly. Lippi's team immediately retook control of the game, nearly doubling their lead through Zambrotta, but both of his efforts were saved by Arason. In the 54th minute, Juve had a great chance: Nedved crossed for Del Piero, but the goalkeeper did brilliantly to turn the effort over the bar. The Czech then tried a cross shot - cross that Trezeguet flicked goalwards, but couldn't quite control. Iuliano came on for Maresca: the defender went into the centre of the defence, with Thuram going to right back and Tudor into the midfield.

The game grew in intensity as Rosenborg tried their last throw of the dice. The Norwegians tried through Skammelsrud, whose shot was well saved by Buffon, whilst at the other end Hoftun managed to divert away a dangerous Del Piero free kick. From the resulting corner, Davids shot wide. Then Rushfeldt tried a header that went over the bar. At this point, Arason started to give a goalkeeping masterclass, first saving what seemed a certain goal by Del Piero before completing another miracle to deny Trezeguet. Still Juve continued to attack with Iuliano shooting wide from a good position, and Zambrotta's right foot effort being deflected wide for yet another corner.

Buffon stopped a dangerous shot by Strand in the 84th minute, whilst a minute later Lippi substituted Nedved with Paramatti. Juve kept trying to make sure, with a Davids shot finishing wide. At the end of normal time Lippi sent on Salas for Del Piero: leading to Pessotto donning the captains armband for the three minutes of extra time granted by referee Poll.
