A second half hat-trick by Argentine striker Gabriel Batistuta completed a fine AS Roma recovery at Brescia. With five matches gone, Batistuta became Serie A's top scorer with
six goals. AS Roma moved second, one point behind Udinese.

Atalanta continued their surprise start to the season with a draw at AC Milan but were disappointed to have lost a 3-1 lead. Cristiano Doni scored twice and Fausto Rossini added a header to give Atalanta a 3-1 advantage at the break before AC Milan mounted a comeback. Oliver Bierhoff cut the lead and a penalty by Andriy Shevchenko levelled the score as AC Milan avoided
losing their third match of the season. Atalanta remained
unbeaten.

Vicenza earned their second successive victory by beating bottom side Napoli. Two goals by newly-acquired, Naples-born striker Vincenzo Sommese gave Vicenza the win, leaving Napoli with just one point from five matches.

Two goals by French international David Trezeguet gave Juventus victory at Reggina. Goalkeeper Massimo Taibi's blunder in the closing moments of the first half paved the way for
Trezeguet to fire home a shot from the edge of the box to give
Juve the lead. Trezeguet struck again in the second half,

For the first time in the club's 104-year history, Udinese stand alone at the top of Serie A. Argentine striker Roberto Sosa scored his fourth of the season and Massimo Margiotta added the second as Udinese won at home against Lecce to pull one
point clear of second-placed AS Roma.

Inter fell behind to a 15th minute goal from Verona's Emiliano Bonazzoli but levelled 11 minutes later through
Francisco Farinos. Verona edged back in front in the 43rd minute
thanks to a superb strike from Vincenzo Italiano, but the
midfielder was instantly dismissed after he picked up a second
yellow card for excessive goal celebrations. With Verona down to
10 men for the entire second half, Hakan Sukur found the
equaliser in the 81st.

Greek striker Zisis Vryzas led Perugia to a dramatic win at struggling Fiorentina with a hat-trick. Fiorentina went ahead through Angelo Di Livio in the 22nd minute before Vryzas
equalised and then a Luca Saudati penalty put the visitors
ahead. Brazilian Leandro equalised for Fiorentina but Vryzas struck
twice before Leandro's second gave Fiorentina some hope.
Lazio 2 - Bologna 0
Lazio: Pavel Nedved 10', Hernan Crespo 65'

Attendance: 45,000
Czech Pavel Nedved scored after 10 minutes and Argentine international Hernan Crespo added a second after the break to give champions Lazio a comfortable victory. After a stuttering start Lazio have now won two consecutive games and moved fourth.
