Gabriel Batistuta scored his first goal for Roma in the 42nd minute with a firm header from a Cafu cross. Damiano Tomassi added the second three minutes after the re-start before Batistuta struck again, blasting home a left foot drive from a narrow angle. Francesco Totti wrapped up game with a penalty in the final minute after Marco Delvecchio had been pulled down by Lecce
defender Alberto Savino.

Bologna had taken the lead in the first half through defender Giovanni Bia before Ukranian international Andriy Shevchenko equalised for AC Milan with a second half header. Fifteen minutes from time AC Milan had Federico Giunti sent off for his second offence.

Only 12,000 were on hand in pouring rain. An in-form Roberto Baggio led Brescia while Diego Fuser almost snatched a win for Parma with a shot just wide in the closing minutes. It was Brescia's first point of the season.

Two goals in three minutes by Portuguese striker Nuno Gomes and Brazilian forward Leandro gave Fiorentina a come-from-behind victory against Reggina. After attacking for most of the match, Fiorentina fell behind to a header by Reggina's Massimo Marazzina in the 69th minute before mounting a furious rally to save the day for Fiorentina manager Fatih Terim.

The Milan giants, inspired by Luigi di Biagio who former boss Lippi nearly sold to Fiorentina two weeks ago, ran their opponents ragged to go 3-0 in front before half-time, Di Biagio, Ivan Zamorano and Laurent Blanc with the goals. David Sesa scored Napoli's second-half consolation.
