Juventus 2 - Atalanta 1
Trezeguet 5' (J), Tacchinardi 64' (J), Nappi 84' (A)
Sunday 17 June 2001
Only Lazio lost. Juventus and Roma, the League Champions, won against
Atalanta and Parma. The Bianconeri confirm a second place that gives them
direct qualification to the Champions League. Against Atalanta it was
Trezeguet who broke the deadlock after just five minutes. Tacchinardi
scored a second eighteen minutes into the second half, while Nappi closed
the gap after a pitch invasion from the home fans.
How can a player that wears the number 17 on his shirt be unlucky? Last
Sunday at Vicenza, Trezeguet didn't seem particularly interested in the
ironic questions that came his way regarding the effect of being on
thirteen league goals for the season, and indeed just five minutes into the
match Trezegol found the net.
Juventus had started in command with efforts from Tacchinardi and Zidane
close to breaking the deadlock. Trezegol opened the scoring heading home a
cross from Tudor.
Atalanta played with many absences and could do little to compete with
Juventus, not at their best but certainly determined to win the match.
With victory seemingly secure, Juventus were happy to try from long range.
On sixteen minutes Tacchinardo shot from distance, and from the
goalkeeper's block, Del Piero's header was saved.
Zidane, was forced to leave the pitch, his place being taken by Inzaghi.
The first half saw little more action. Ferrari headed just wide and a shot
from Bellini was saved by Van der Sar.
In the second half Trezeguet and Del Piero tried to finish the game off,
while Nappi's header showed that Atalanta were still in the game.
Eighteen minutes into the second half came the second goal. From a Del
Piero corner, Tacchinardi controlled and hit a great shot home from outside
the area. The midfielder first went to celebrate with Alex Del Piero, then
hugged Ancelotti with his team-mates.
After seventy minutes Athirson came on in place of Paramatti, with Pessotto
moving to a more defensive role to leave space for the Brazilian. Pippo
Inzaghi tried to gain some personal satisfaction from what could possibly
be his last game with Juventus with a left shot saved by Pelizzoli.
Then with a quarter of an hour still to play, Juventus fans from both ends
of the ground invaded the pitch and the game was suspended. After some
time, and thanks to the intervention of the vice president Roberto Bettega
("If you are Juventus fans like me, let them finish the match"), the fans
finally retreated to the edge of the pitch.
The game restarted and Nappi went clear, unmarked, to score and close the
gap. After that there was no more significant action and at the end of the
match there was another pitch invasion.
