Fabio Pecchia burst through a gaping hole in the Atalanta defence to put Napoli ahead in the first half before Cristiano Doni scored Atalanta's equaliser from a penalty awarded for a fiercely contested handball decision. It was Atalanta's fourth consecutive home draw and Napoli's first point in six straight away matches.

Roberto Baggio's 86th minute equaliser dented Juve's title prospects. Baggio rounded keeper Edwin Van der Sar to stroke home his 167th Serie A goal after Gianluca Zambrotta had put Juventus ahead with a superb volley from 25 metres in the 30th minute. Juve forward Alessandro Del Piero and Brescia striker Dario Hubner both hit the woodwork before the interval. Juventus had won their previous five home matches in the league. [Full match report]

Zvonimir Boban's goal in the 59th minute was one of the few highlights of a cagey match at the San Siro. The Croat arrived at the edge of the box to meet a Francesco Coco cross with a firm header wich beat Angelo Peruzzi at his right hand post. Lazio defender Paolo Negro wasted a glaring chance to equalise in the 87th when he missed an open goal from no more than five metres.

Abrasive Reggio Emilia derby in which Paolo Cannavaro, younger brother of Italy defender Fabio, was sent off for a second bookable offence. Fine performances from Bologna keeper Gianluca Pagliuca and opposite number Gianluigi Buffon, who has now gone 367 minutes unbeaten at Parma's Tardini stadium. Parma stay fourth.

Christian Vieri's first hat-trick in 18 months gave Inter a boost in their bid to secure a Champions League berth. Vieri scored his first with a header, his second with his right foot and his third with his left. Inter had French defender Laurent Blanc sent off in the 48th minute with the score at 1-1. Perugia hit the woodwork late on before Greek Zisis Vryzas grabbed what proved to be a consolation goal in injury time.

Reggina goalkeeper Massimo Taibi scored an 88th minute equaliser to give his struggling side a point. Taibi, who joined the Reggina attack in a desparate final bid to save the match, met a corner kick with an unstoppable header at the near post. Brazilian defender Alberto had given Udinese a 68th minute lead.

AS Roma 3 - Verona 1

Roma had to come from behind for a victory which lifts them nine points clear of Juventus at the top of Serie A. Argentine midfielder Mauro Camoranesi gave the visitors a shock lead before two headed goals from Vincenzo Montella in the 55th and 68th and Gabriel Batistuta's 15th league strike of the season secured Roma's victory.

A vital win for bottom club Bari in the Puglia derby. Striker Paolo Poggi scored the decisive goal deep in injury time after Lecce's Croatian Davor Vugrinec and Bari's Swedish forward had grabbed two apiece. Bari remain bottom while Lecce are in mid-table.

Rui Costa scored 15 minutes from time to salvage a point for Fiorentina and give coach Roberto Mancini his third draw in three matches since his took over from Turk Fatih Terim. Vicenza, flirting with relegation, took the lead on 10 minutes when Fiorentina's Czech defender Tomas Repka deflected a Vincenzo Sommese shot into his own net.
