Lazio's first league defeat since Dino Zoff took over as coach on January 9 brought their remarkable run of six consecutive away victories to an end. The dismissal of Portuguese centre-back Fernando Couto for elbowing an opponent in the 44th minute gave Bologna, already one goal in front, the upper hand before former Lazio talisman Giuseppe Signori killed his old club off with his eighth of the season. Lazio now trail leaders Roma by 11 points.

A vital win for Inter after their defeat at Roma last weekend. Christian Vieri scored the opener from the penalty spot after he was tugged down by former Inter keeper Fabrizio Ferron. Turk Hakan Sukur added the second for an Inter side who hit the woodwork twice. Verona had Alessandro Mazzola sent off en route to their seventh consecutive defeat on the road.

A header by Igor Tudor from a Zinedine Zidane cross on the half hour was enough to give Juve their seventh consecutive home win to keep them within sight of leaders Roma. Udinese took the lead through a typical towering header from Argentine striker Roberto Carlos Sosa before Swede Klas Ingesson equalised for the southerners with his first goal since his return to Serie A from France. Cristiano Lucarelli scored Lecce's winner from the spot. His 13 goals this season have accounted for a remarkable 17 of Lecce's 29 league points.

Fiorentina fought back from 2-0 down to give Roberto Mancini a point from his first ever match as coach. Enrico Chiesa's 56th minute volley and a header from Ivory Coast defender Saliou Lassissi sparked the Florentine recovery before their keeper Francesco Toldo saved a late penalty from Luca Saudati. Fiorentina, third in mid-January, are now 11th.

Roma squandered a hatful of chances before Vincenzo Montella sealed a club record seventh consecutive league victory with two late goals, the second a brilliant individual effort in wich he turned his marker and fired a shot high into the Brescia net from a tight angle. Montella has now scored five in three matches and Roma remain six points clear at the top.

Goals from the highly-rated Luca Toni and substitute Fabio Firmani gave Vicenza a vital and deserved win which allowed them to leapfrog over relegation rivals Napoli. The home side also hit the post in the second half.

A superb overhead kick from Maurizio Ganz gave Atalanta a 1-1 draw against his former club, who led for most of the match thanks to a Stefano Lorenzi own goal. Milan, who face Deportivo Coruna for a place in the last eight of the Champions League on Tuesday, looked tense and captain Paolo Maldini had a public bust-up with midfielder Zvonimir Boban before the final whistle.
