Shadow Play Analysis

Introduction: "The Shadow Girls"

"Who/What Are They?"

Gogai, gogai!

Extra, Extra!

A-ko: The shadow girl with the large bow in her hair. Possibly a space alien.

B-ko: The shadow girl who generally performs in tandem with A-ko, who has rather disconnected buns on either side of her head. Also possibly a space alien.

C-ko: The shadow girl with the ponytail who typically performs solo or sometimes with A-ko and B-ko, and also appears in the movie. Possibly a monkey.

E-ko: The shadow girl with the straight bangs from the movie. Possibly a straw doll.

F-ko: The shadow girl with the lightning coming out of her head in the movie. Also possibly a straw doll.

(Why no D-ko, I have no idea.)

Kashira, kashira, dozonai kashira?

"I wonder, I wonder, do you know what I wonder?"

What are the shadow girls? They appear in every episode of the anime and the movie and have little plays commenting on the events of the story in a very bizarre and sideways direction. They seem to know everything about the characters, but the characters know nothing about them.

According to the director, Kunihiko Ikuhara, they are the director's voice in the show. According to most fans, they are 100% nonsense.

This site is my attempt to prove that the shadow girls' plays are not just bunk, but in fact quite logical (most of the time).

The shadow girls are always a bit of an enigma - or as A-ko and B-ko would say, "an eternal mystery!"
