Shadow Play Analysis

Episode 31: "Her Tragedy"

"Parasitism"

shadow: Monkey escaped...monkey escaped...
shadow: Where is monkey...where is monkey...
shadow: Cuckoo! Cuckoo!
shadow: Now I'm gonna sneak my egg into somebody else's nest and get them to raise it cuckoo.
shadow: In the jargon this is known as "parasitism".
shadow: Ta-da! A newborn cuckoo.
shadow: But, it's a cuckoo who's real identity is secret!
shadow: Check it out, mom. Some strange duck is here!
shadow: Nya, ugly little duckling!
shadow: This can't be, dammit!
shadow: Just watch! One day a beautiful white swan -
Utena: is not what you're gonna become.
shadow: Argh.
shadow: Monkey detected...monkey detected...monkey fleeing...capture monkey...

Nanami is obviously QUITE emotionally dependant on her brother - as well as materially dependant to some extent (though she did try to transfer to another school and presumably take care of herself, he certainly took care of the transfer request). However, when with him, she is not really a parasite, because she gives him all her love in return.

However, once Nanami leaves Touga because he can no longer provide her with the emotional support she desires, she becomes a parasite living off others. She moves in with Miki, then Juri, and even tries to leech off Mitsuru until she comes to the Chairman's residence. Nanami is a parasite in these situations because, unlike with Touga, she gives them nothing in return for their hospitality.

Nanami, Nanami. Such a horrible girl. We always knew that the real vermin was you.

I'm not really sure about this one, (I may be over analysing as usual) but this play may also refer to Nanami and Touga's adoption. Both ducks were stuck in the cuckoo's nest. Their adoptive parents were rich, but they haven't contributed much to either's upbringing, as is evidenced by Nanami's dependance on Touga rather than her parents.

The Kiryuus, (the cuckoos), stuck with a couple of ducks, called them ugly ducklings, but by the time they are in Ohtori they are both powerful, popular and intelligent students (never mind all their psychological problems), determined to become swans.

Extra: This is the first time that C-ko shows up since the Black Rose Arc, I believe.
