Shadow Play Analysis

Episode 30: "The Barefoot Girl"

"Dancing Shoes"

shadow: Those shoes, those shoes, those shoes!
shadow: Throw out those shoes at once!
shadow: Why should I do that to my precious red shoes?
shadow: If you wear those you'll have to go on dancing until you die!
shadow: There are things...one does...even if one knows...they're wrong!
shadow: After all...don't you have...the same red shoes...as mine?
shadow: I own them, that's all. I'll never put them on.
shadow: You won't put them on, but you have them.
shadow: You have them, but you won't put them on, fool.
shadow: Your life's too short for that!
note: ["hakanai" = "don't put on" / "fleeting time"]

I love this one. :P

To the observant (or even the not-so-observant) viewer, it is now quite apparent that Utena is in love with Akio. However, Utena believes that since Akio is her best friend's older brother and "practically family," then he is off-limits - and she hides her feelings for him. Utena has her red shoes, but she refuses to wear them and show them off to the world.

Once you have put the shoes on you can't take them off again - everyone will know about your feelings, and they will continue knowing even if you fall out of love. Utena also knows that putting on the shoes of love will have her dancing down the path of the princess with no way back.

However, Wakaba is not so discreet. She thinks Akio hangs the moon and doesn't care who knows it. She's even observant enough to see that Utena is jealous. Wakaba tells Utena that there is no such thing as a "wrong love". To Wakaba, life is too short to never dance.

By the end of the episode, Utena is still in denial about her feelings for Akio. Go figure.
