Shadow Play Analysis

Episode 26: "Miki's Nest Box (Sunlit Garden - Arranged Version)"

"Time to Quit?"

shadow: I wonder I wonder, do you know what I wonder?
shadow: Honored guest, isn't it about time to quit?
shadow: Damn it, I'm betting my entire purse! All of it on black!
shadow: Are you positive?
shadow: Oh, what a shame! It was red!
shadow: Honored guest, didn't you said you hated gambling, and had never done it before in your life?
shadow: Hey! You're the one who recommended I try it at least once!
shadow: Just stay put. I'm gonna withdraw my life savings.
shadow: What a sucker.

In the most broad sense, this play refers to ALL of the duelists of the final arc. They lost the first time, and here they all are coming back (after emptying their bank accounts - that is to say, getting their Brides involved) to lose again. You think they'd get the message the first time.

Miki detests adults. In his mind, all they do is manipulate and hurt children. This is most likely a result of his rather bad relationship with his parents, but it's also a result of his insight on exactly what Akio is doing with the duelists. He knows that the duelists are being used.

And yet, while Miki detests adults, his personal goal in the duels is to BECOME the adult in control, taking what he wants (Anthy) by force. Kozue shows him the illusion of driving the Akio car, with Anthy in the passenger seat, because she knows that is his desire.

Miki has been saying all his life that he hated gambling, yet here his is putting all his money on black.

Miki, like all the duelists, is a sucker.
