Shadow: Extra! Extra! Extra!
Shadow: Today, oh today, was my first time!
Shadow: What? And you didn't tell your own father?
Shadow: Where did it happen?
Shadow: Inside a car, I hear.
Shadow: What?! Damn you!
Shadow: Now, now, dear...
Shadow: My heart was going a mile a minute, but I don't regret it!
Shadow: You're awfully determined, for your first time and all.
Shadow: It did take a lot of courage,
Shadow: ...but if you think of it as proof of adulthood, it's not so painful ,
Shadow: ...and besides, you get juice and stuff when you leave.
Shadow: Huh? What are we talking about here?
Shadow: Isn't it obvious? I gave blood today.
Utena: You can give blood when you're sixteen.
Shadow: P-R-O-O-F of adulthood.
This one is one of the funniest.
Throughout this entire episode, Mitsuru is trying to become an adult - and if you're paying
attention, everyone is saying that to become an adult you have to have "experience
in adult things" - generally implying sex.
Of course, if you think this is true, you have a lot of learning to do. Doing the dirty deed
with Akio didn't do much for Utena's maturity level. I think that by the end, it's pretty
much established that maturity, or "becoming a prince", or "graduating from Ohtori", means
one thing: acceptance of responsibility.
Anyway, so another gag going around in this episode is how everything the characters say is
twisted into something sexual. Mitsuru says he'll be happy if Nanami eats a banana that
he was holding - Mari is grossed out. Utena says that being mature means having experience
in adult things (to which Anthy replies that she has experience is "adult things" - no kidding)
, while Suzuki, Yamada and Tanaka in the background look as if they're hearing something
dirty.
Of course, Mari's reaction could be explained away by her being at the age where everything
is dirty, but these misconceptions are echoed in the shadow play.
It seems that C-ko's idea of maturity is giving blood - if I REALLY want to read into this,
I could equate giving blood to the sacrifice that a prince makes. And a prince, as we know,
is an adult.
...But I may just be overanalyzing things.
