A-ko: Look, look, I've found a kitten.
A-ko: I wonder what I should name it.
B-ko: How about "Jewel?"
A-ko: That's too ordinary. Aren't there any more unusual names?
B-ko: "Unusual Jewel"
A-ko: Umm, no, not quite. Isn't there a name which is more tasteful?
B-ko: "Tasteful Unusual Jewel"
A-ko: No, that's not it...
A-ko: Isn't there some name that's cute-sounding, dignified, and easy to remember?
B-ko: "Cute-sounding Dignified Easy to Remember Tasteful Unusual Jewel"
A-ko: Oh, all right, already!
A-ko: If "Jewel" is really that good, than "Jewel" it is.
B-ko: Come here, Juliano.
A-ko: Hey, I said enough with the cute names!
This episode gave me no end of grief. I basically came to the conclusion that it meant nothing
and was merely a director's joke, but just to complete the site I gave it a pot shot anyway.
From the flashbacks to Nanami and Touga's childhoods, we get the feeling that they were
quite pampered, but they didn't get much emotional attention. Typical spoiled rich kids,
really. This is made rather evident by Touga's ritzy birthday party - everyone's invited and
it's quite glamourous, but he's bored and quite obviously wants to be elsewhere.
Later in Touga's life, he found his attention among the girls at Ohtori. He constantly has
a gaggle following around, and one might say that his need for constant female attention
is a result of a lack of attention on the part of his parents.
But I digress.
Nanami, on the other hand, has not been sated in her desire for attention. Despite
having the attentions of her three sycophants and a number of other hangers-on, she knows
that this attention is empty and craves for real affection - mostly from Touga.
Now, getting back to the point...
So there during the course of the episode, the Student Council (well, Miki and Juri, really)
is wondering who will be the next duelist. In all their focus in trying to name who the
duelist will be they ignore the ripening apple right beneath their noses: Nanami.
Nanami has been ignored by the cast and probably you - yes YOU, the audience, up until this
point, discarded as mere comedy relief. But while she has been ignored by her family and
her brother, she has, like the little unnamed kitty, grown into a character with a very
strong reason to duel.
...And let's end it there, because I'm really, REALLY grasping at strings.
