Whilst skiing, John is blinded by a light from the sky, and crashes, knocking him unconcious.  The light was a spherical device sent down by an alien (Thexian) space ship to destroy the Earth.  The aliens make Earth aware of of the device, and demand that all Earth defences are taken down, and will detonate it if they refuse....
