ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF ART, HEAD OF TEXTILES
SCHOOL OF ART AND DESIGN AT GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY

Junco Sato Pollack is an artist/designer, researcher, and educator. She is Associate Professor of Textiles at the School of Art and Design of Georgia State University in Atlanta, Gorgia. Prior to coming to Georgia State University in the fall of 1992 she taught textile art at Parsons School of Design in New York, at Kutztown University of the Pennsylvania State University system, and at Nazareth College of Rochester, NY. Pollack is a sought after lecturer and workshops leader at numerous national and international conferences. Participation and presentation includes International Surface Design Conference 2000, International Shibori Symposium in Nagoya, Japan 1993, Ahmedabad, India 1996, Santiago, Chile 1999, and International Makers Symposium at Harbourfront, Toronto, Canada 1999.

Pollack received a MFA in Textile Design from the School of American Craft, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in 1991 and a BA from Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo, Japan, 1972. Her education philosophy matches RIT's in its integral approach to the education of fine art, design, and craft embracing a Bauhaus tradition while maintaining the importance of handcraft in an industrial and post-industrial era.

Pollack brings the strength of her training and experience as an artist to her role as educator. Pollack's training includes a professional apprenticeship with a master silk weaver and dyer in Kyoto, Japan, and the study of European decorative arts and textile design at the Muse des Arts Dcoratifs in Paris. Pollack researches material technology and design history and creates textile artwork reflecting a historical approach with contemporary solution. Her experience includes working with textile mills in Italy and France, as well as the U.S., on design commissions for home furnishings and hospitality market based on silk weaving and new heat transfer with digital printing technology.

Pollack has exhibited internationally at such museums as Museo Nacional Bellas Artes in Santiago, Chile, the Historical Textile Museum and Guimet Museum of Lyons, France and the Textile Museum at Terrassa, Spain.

Nationally she has exhibited at American Craft Museum, New York, Museum of fine Art, Houston, the Milwaukee Museum, the Dawny Museum of Los Angeles and six others in the U.S. Her work is in permanent collections around the world including American Craft Museum, Pittsburgh Airport, Hotel Mandarin Miami, King and Spalding in Atlanta, RIT Wallace Memorial Library in Rochester, Shibori Kaikan Museum Archives in Arimatsu, Japan, and numerous private collections in the U.S., Holland, and Japan.

Gallery exhibitions have been held in many cities such as Manza, Italy, Tokyo, Nagoya, and Kyoto, Japan, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Seattle, Washington, D.C., Taos, and other cities around the globe.

Pollack is invited to exhibit among the leading artists in fiber in the exhibition entitled, Catalyst: Cutting Edge in Fiber Arts, February 15 - May 20, 2002 at the Textile Museum in Washington D.C. with speaking engagement for the related symposium and discussion sessions scheduled around the exhibition. Pollack's work is included among the selected works from American Craft Museum's permanent collection, now on view in the exhibition entitled, Redefining Craft: Collecting for the 21st Century at Museum of Fine Art in Houston, Tx. scheduled to tour in European Museums in 2003. Pollack collaborated with Japanese textile designer/artist Junichi Arai on a large scale installation of metallic textile sculpture, entitled, Reflections to be installed in the atrium of the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, a multi million dollar project to be completed in the spring of 2002.

Honors include Influential Artist/Designer of the Year 2000, and Who's who in the Art of the 21st Century both nominated by the Biographical Society of Cambridge, England. Pollack competed in and was chosen to be among the five finalists representing the United States (with 60 from the whole world) in the SPACE Gallery November '94 International Textile Contest in Tokyo, Japan. The sixty finalists were chosen from six industrial countries, England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the U.S. The exhibition proposed new standards in textile art and design education that encourages new, innovative, and experimental approaches to this medium. By being among the five U.S. finalists. Pollack demonstrates in her professional activity what she professes as an educator.
