Joe Wortham

Brief biblio: Born and raised in Texas, educated in Oklahoma, taught in Florida, worked for Fed Government, worked in industry, retired at 42, went broke, worked in industry, bought two farms (went broke again), continued to work in industry.

Manager of "Technical Services" for major corporation 'til the Government started to give away for free what we charged for. Transfered to "Long Range Planning", where all went well until group blew "Long Range Forecast", company changed name of group to "Planning Department". Company sold division, so graceously accepted transfer to "Commercial Planning" in corporate research. Marketing/research projects included; odor abatement, biopesticides, estrous detection, liver assist device, genetic engineering of plants/animals &c. Succeeded in saving company money by killing a number of my own projects (not a good idea if interested in status quo). Took early retirement and moved to South Dakota. Enjoy teaching new and old dogs new tricks, u-bet.

Have invented "things" all my life. Among the most notable is a biodetection system launched by our Government and which lies somewhere on Mars doing absolutely nothing. Developed a diet for turkeys that resulted in their gaining over a pound for every pound of feed. With a group of others at Florida State studied the blood of tadpoles. Since my kids had diaper rash, invented a preventative. A lot of lower molecular weight organic acids stink, so developed a pipe line reactor for reactions. Invented a means of tagging DNA so that ownership can be established and proven. Developed a pancake mix for cattle (actually a liquid supplement with a flour base). Found a means for avoiding purifying a pharmaceutical, which permitted passing the reaction byproducts which were completely safe, on to the customer. Discovered how to make DNA glow in the dark, nice trick if you are trying to find it. Found out that sheep like tobacco (ruined an experiment when it was discovered that students at the University though it great fun to offer cigarettes to adolescent lambs.) And, I have several hundred other inventions/discoveries &c., just looking for a home.

Most inventions, mine included, find their way into the marketplace with no fanfare or patent activity. These incremental discoveries make the difference of whether a product out preforms the competition. The patents that most major companies so proudly show their stockholders mostly are just that - for show.
