DRESDEN, GERMANY
Dresden suffered greatly when, near the end of World War II, the Allies subjected the city to some of the worst bombing of the war.  Under the Communist Regime, restoration was not a priority.  As a result, a lot of that restoration is going on now, having been started about 1990, or so.
We have obtained some photos from just after the bonbing just to show the extent of the damage.  We hope to be able to give you some indication of how far the city has progressed in a relatively short time.

Above is a crown which is over the main entrance to Schwinger castle, now turned into an art museum.  In the WW2 bonbing, the crown was blown away, while the statues around it remained relatively untouched.

For now, click on the button in the corner of the above picture to see a preview of the pictures already uploaded to our Dresden album.  There will be more pictures coming, showing some of the restored old Dresden, some of the restoration work in progress, and a little of modern Dresden.
NOTE:  Even though some of the links we will be posting will probably refer to the controversy about whether the bombing of Dresden should have taken place, we do not intend to debate that question on this site.

NOTE:  The above three pictures are, to the best of our knowledge, and, judging from their age, in the public domain.
Our day in Dresedn was wet, to say the least.  It was probably the rainiest of day of our whole trip.  Although this limited the photography, it did not stop us.

The Semper Oper - opera and concert hall, now restored.
In a very large park next to the Dresden Zoo, is a ralroad run almost entirely by children.  It is 15-inch gauge.
