Miscellaneous rocket photos

I know, not a photo, but it has a funny story associated with it. Me and a mate were building a model rocket in his flat a few years back. While we were doing so, some stuff fell out of a cupboard into a pile on the floor. From amongst all this crap in a heap on the floor came this hissing sound, which sounded alot like an Estes rocket motor! Well, we both looked at each other with a look of panic and ducked for cover! The hissing sound continued for several seconds, so we concluded it couldn't be a rocket motor. When we went to investigate, all this stuff falling out of the cupboard had landed on a can of deodorant and "set it off". Anyway, it always makes me laugh when I see this cartoon and think of that little incident.
My mate (who shall remain nameless, because he looks like a terrorist in this picture!) preparing to fire his shoulder-launched rocket. It was powered by an Estes D12, and had these cool little fins that flipped out when it left the tube. There were small tabs on the fins that caused the rocket to spin, and according to Gav (who had the best view of it in flight) it flew straight as an arrow.(52K)
The moment of launch. This was taken in some remote dunes at Rhossili on the Gower penisula, Wales. (56K)
Dave and Andy posing with their first model rockets, Estes Vikings I think they were. (68K)
Andy launching his Viking. (101K)
And Dave launching his. (98K)
Ignition! A tiny lightweight rocket that I like to fly on a C6. It always impresses people who don't know much about rockets because it disappears out of sight and stays up for ages on a polythene streamer. (photo: Gareth Pope) (42K)

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

Some photos I took at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center at Greenbelt, Maryland when I was in Washington in April 2001. Note that some of the rockets are nameless; if you know what they are, please email me to let me know.
