Dale to play Maggie the cat

By: Richard Ouzounian

Get ready to sizzle with Cynthia Dale next summer.

It looks like her slinky, sultry turn in this summer's Anything Goes at Stratford is just a warm-up for something considerably more torrid in the 2005 season.

Reliable reports out of Stratford indicate that Dale will be appearing as Maggie in Tennessee Williams' Cat On A Hot Tin Roof next year. That's the role which Elizabeth Taylor made famous in the film version, and on Broadway, it has been played with great success by the likes of Kathleen Turner, Elizabeth Ashley and most recently Ashley Judd.

Expect Dale to be joined by David Snelgrove (currently playing the title role in The Count Of Monte Cristo) as her sexually conflicted husband, Brick.

Although at Stratford Dale is known for her performances in numerous musicals, she also has appeared in dramatic roles, most notably as Annie Sullivan in 1998's The Miracle Worker.

More Tennessee Williams is also planned with a production of Orpheus Descending, rumoured to be directed by Miles Potter, starring Seana McKenna and Jonathan Goad.

Desperately seeking Shakespeare? Expect to see The Tempest and Measure For Measure, the latter to be directed by Leon Rubin, who helmed this season's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

And from the ever-popular musical theatre division of the Festival, some more reports and corrections. Jesus Christ Superstar will in all likelihood be directed by Peter Hinton, whose previous Stratford exposure has been as author and director of all three parts of The Swanne.

Broadway veteran Susan Schulman (whose previous work at the Festival has included Man Of La Mancha, Fiddler On The Roof and The King And I) is expected to be directing Hello, Dolly! but earlier reports that Andrea Martin would be taking the leading role have proved to be premature and the former SCTV actress is not likely to be taking up residence in Perth County anytime soon.
